Scary Jerry : Photosport.co.nzAll Black rugby has been blessed with all manner of stars in the last two decades, overpowering monsters on the wing, tactically sublime pivots, fullbacks with mercury in their orthodics.  We've had flankers packing predatory hands that can poach ball under noses, gruff forwards with aching affection for colliding and pushing.

All good of course, lovely to see.

But only occasionally do we glimpse a hint of a primal force at work, the barely shackled beast running amuck, the wolf with barely enough domesticity to qualify as a dog hunting with the pack.

They're the blokes with a hunger in their whole demeanour, a low growl barely audible, constantly in the back of their throats.  They inspire fear in the opposition to unheralded levels.  Cowering men in white and blue and gold would rather tear their finger nails off and jam them in their eyes than run into these black-hearted men.

It's been a long time since we had a Buck Shelford, someone who would drop a testicle or two on the pitch with barely a wince, and keep snarling and crashing with complete reckless disregard for physical limitations.

Now the rebirth is complete.  All you sad bastards with `Bring Back Buck' teeshirts and banners and placards can put them away for good.

Scary Jerry is here.
