Why I don't like Puppet Print E-mail

I have always supported a coach who gets meaningful results against meaningful opposition. Coach Puppet has few distinctions next to his name that no coaches before him have. First ever win in Dunedin, biggest victory ever over Australia, biggest victory ever recorded against England at Twickenham and so far, a first test win against the Lions.

However, he is a divisive individual that his hell bent on crying racism at every corner and turn. Playing the race card every time he has to answer a critic. He embarrassed South Africa last year when we were well and truly beaten in Australia by the Ozzies, by failing to acknowledge the better side had won and worst off, blaming defeat squarely on the ref.

What about the Craig Dowd incident in New Zealand where, if memory serves me correctly, he branded Dowd a racist and demanded an apology. He embarrassed us In New Zealand with that little “cry race” episode.

Last year he was in the news for a sex scandal after it had been alleged that he was seen getting fresh with some women in a motor car at night. Again Puppet cried racism, claiming he was the victim of a racist plot by white people of this country just because he was black.

Fast track to the present tense and again I am flabbergasted by his response to justifiable criticism of an out of form scrumhalf, Ricki Januarie… w ho suddenly we have been made aware by de Villiers himself ,is a player of colour. The little scrummies race was never the issue, his performance on the rugby field was. The same people who criticized Januarie’ selection are also mostly the same people heaping accolades on our newest darling, Beast for his monstrous showing in the front row against the Lions. And we also know his race too.

Puppet has played the race card because the knowledgeable rugby public have dared to question the form of a player who happens to be a man of colour. Insulting with the potential of politicizing through a sportsman. Yet it is fact that this little dynamic player at the best of times, has been nowhere near form for the whole of this season and again it showed against the Lions.

"He made one mistake on Saturday, but so did other players. What I have learnt in South Africa is the following; if you take your car to a garage to be repaired and the owner is black and he doesn't do a good job, you will never take it back there again. But if the owner is white and the garage makes a mistake, people say, never mind, he made a mistake and will take it back again".

This was our beloved coach’s response to the criticism against Januarie’s selection. What an idiot. Play the race card. Something he does over and over again. It makes me wonder whether his remarks has the potential to cause division and/or resentment in the Bok squad itself.

That is how some people live their lives in this country. I respect people and their opinions but I don't have to listen to them," he added.
"I'm just giving him a chance, maybe tomorrow he plays a brilliant match and then there is suddenly nothing wrong with his form," De Villiers said when asked if he implied that public opinion against Januarie was based on discrimination of the Bok's skin colour.

He also explained why he (De Villiers) didn't pay attention to public opinion. "I like doing my own thing and I don't care what other people think. Their opinion is just that, an opinion. I can't listen to 43 million people' opinions because then I won't know where I am."
De Villiers thinks the Bok victory is not being appreciated enough. "The one thing that people appear to forget, is the result. We won the test. We waited 12 years to win this match and we did it."

Again the idiot who holds the position of Bok coach is so dismissive of a small number of people. Say 43 million worth to use his own words. He is arrogant, conceited, racist and divisive not only in rugby circles but in our South African society.

If you were the Bok coach how would you have responded to the criticism of Januarie. If it was me, instead of crying racist foul, I would have perhaps said something along these lines

“South African rugby fans are very passionate about their rugby and all the players know this and feel the pressure to perform for our country. Ricki is a fine player and we all know what he can do. Look how he won us the game in Dunedin last year. Yes, he hasn't been at the top of his game, but we are giving him every opportunity to play himself into form and I have every confidence that he will do just that”

Perfect statement. No racism bought into it, its not dismissive of 43 million people, its not divisive, its not politicising, and it certainly acknowledges the role our fanatic sports fans play in South African rugby.

Instead our coach alienates himself from the rugby public by basically making a statement that says “43 million people…Go f#*k off”
It is this very distinguished quality in our national coach that I utterly despise. The virtual dismissal of an entire population. Everyone can get stuffed, I know what I am doing… throw some racism in there along the way.

If Puppet went and thrashed the Lions 50-0 in the next two tests and followed this up with unlikely thrashings of our Tri Nation partners to go down in history as the most successful coach in history… it would not stop me wishing for his departure.

These are some of the reasons I just don’t like this man.

(and then he goes and drops his black mechanic for the second test anyway - BartMan)
