After weeks and weeks of extensive research, here are the five squads that could be named today - my stab in the dark anyway... Not too many surprises, my Chiefs side looking stronger than the side that made the final last season (and where whopped up, just to keep we Chiefs fans in our place). The big question in the Chiefs camp though, which All Black first five will be playing, and which on the bench, or hopefully, Donald in 12 and Delany in 10, I like that idea. Three tighthead specialists named in the Chiefs squad, an interesting call, who is the 'allrounder' that can play both sides - my pick McGougan, and on the call of the New Zealand selectors. Or is that just a hope? The Blues looking to me at least, a little week in the propping department once you take out Woodcock. Two imported tens in Brett and Kirkpatrick, and Lucky Luke also vying for that spot, perhaps. In Luke's case more like wanting to be at 12, but getting forced to play 10 when the other two self destruct. Blues will beat some good teams this coming season, but don't expect them to be there when the prizes are being handed out in May. Hurricanes too looking a little week in the front row ranks, Hika Elliot staying with the Chiefs, so Coles remains the number two choice for the windy city wonders. Young Aaron Cruden gets his chance to shine too, and fingers crossed he does for New Zealand, and Hurricanes rugby sake. They could win things if they had a real ten. Also means a happy Weepu, playing nine week in and week out. Unless Bridesmaid coach Cooper calls the other way again. Highlanders, well now is their hour, upfront anyway, with the third season as a tight five, it is now or never for the 'nearly' men to make the grade. Michael Hobbs added to the mix this season as the Highlanders also try and find a ten to carry their hopes. My outside tip at this early stage for top four. Crusaders. Dan's back. Jack's back. Brett's gone. So it is all good for the red and blacks. So while the Highlanders might be the outside tip, hugging the inside rail at the moment from the Kiwi teams would have to be the 4 million times champions. But without further ado, Bart's Super 14 squads for 2010, probably. Blues: Chiefs: Hurricanes: Crusaders: Highlanders:
