Team of the week - Round 1 Print E-mail

Ok, round one, everyone has an idea who they thought went well, so I might as well kick off the debate with my attempt at a team of the week for the NZ players.

 15. Cory Jane. Looked dangerous on attack, and safe in defence, and to mine the best of a decent bunch this week. Delaney some nice touches, Dagg some real good mixed with some ordinary, Slade was just safe.

 14. Zac Guildford (yes i know he played 11) Hungry for work, scored a great try, looked dangerous with ball in hand.

 13. Conrad Smith. On a night when the Hurricanes stuggled to create attacking threats, he constantly took the right options on attack and defense.

 12. Jackson Willison. Scored the game winner, bent the line every time he got the ball, and solid in D in shit conditions. The bigger names were only ok thisweek, so the Chiefs youngster gets the nod

 11. Hosea Gear. Quick, scored a great try running onto Stephen Bretts perfect pass, chased hard, generally had a good wingers game. Mention to Sivi for a good game in shit conditions for a winger.

 10. Michael Hobbs. DC was up and down, the 2 from Friday were average to poor, Donald was horrible. The 'landers may have lost, but not because of this blokes effort, did everything he could to drag them back into it

 9. Andy Ellis. All the halves were decent, but I thought Ellis gave the best delivery and organised his pack really well. Good game.

 8. Thomas Waldrom. All the 8s were subdued I thought, but Waldrom gets my vote, not least because he played well without just being a tank with the ball.

 7. Scott Waldrom. Like the 8s, i thought the 7s were quiet, but i saw enough from Waldrom on Friday night, making a menace of himself to give him the nod. Honourable mention to the 'landers bloke who came off the bench, he also put himself about.

 6. Kieran Read. Unlike the 7s and 8s, the 6s were into everything. Messam was awesome for the Chiefs, Thompson threw himself about for the 'landers, but Read was great for the Crusaders, quite the leader.

 5. Craig Clarke. Engine room of a dominant scrum, won his lineouts, put himself about in defense, a good tight locks game.

 4. Josh Bekhuis. Hits rucks, wins lineouts, and shows good skills out wide, a real comer. On a night where Ross was off his game, he certainly put himself on show.

 3. Owen Franks. I picked the 'landers to pump the highlanders at the scrum. Apparently Franks is much better than i thought. By the end of the year the AB tight head battle could be real interesting.

 2. Aled de Malmanche. Someone fed this bloke angry pills, he smashed into everything, hit his lineout targets, and won the scrum battle against the best hooker in the world. I thought all the hookers played well this weekend.

 1. Sona Taumalolo. Another one on the Chiefs angry pills, piled into everything, won the scrum battle against his test playing opposite, a good day.

That's my take anyway. Dominated by the teams that got a win (no Blues was a surprise) with a couple of standout Highlanders.
