TSF Team of the Year 2021

For the first second time in the recorded history(1) of The Silver Fern Team of the Year New Zealand do not have the highest number of representatives. New Zealand’s representation has been eclipsed for the first time in TOTY history with World Champions, Lion Tamers and world’s top ranked team South Africa topping the polling this year in the world’s most authoritative determination of the worlds’ best rugby players.

The All Blacks tally of a mere four representatives is their lowest ever total, surpassing(2) their previous low score of five in 2007 when they shared the billing with World Cup winners South Africa.

This time South Africa outstripped the Kiwis providing five representatives, including four in the forwards, reflective of their maintained position at the top of the World Rugby rankings.

The Bok’s representatives included two thirds of the loose forwards, with inspirational skipper Siya Kolisi on the blindside (in a well contested poll) and warhorse Duane Vermeulen selected at Number 8.

The selections of Lock Eben Estebeth and loosehead prop Steven Kitshoff give South Africa 40% of the tight forwards. Lukanyo Am’s great form was rewarded with selection at centre.

New Zealand’s strength in this year’s TSF TOTY is the back three, which was exclusively occupied by All Blacks. World Rugby Break Through Player of the Year and try scoring machine Will Jordan makes the right wing, while Rieko Ioane becomes Karl Marx Award recipient as the year’s best left winger (as well as polling noticeably for the centre position) . The ever improving Jordie Barrett takes on the custodian role at the back.

Perhaps indicative of New Zealand’s chequered results in 2021 is the fact that their only forward is 2021 debutante and usual bench hooker Samisoni Taukei’aho, with only 48% of the votes. Admittedly his All Blacks team mate Dane Coles also polled at 20% for the same position.

The building feeling that France are developing as potential favourites for their home World Cup in 2023 (crikey, that’s only next year) is reflected in the selection of their young and exciting halves paring of Antoine Dupont and Romaine Ntamack. Dupont gets the nod at halfback with 70% dominating the vote, shouldering out Aaron Smith in what most right thinking people would consider a major surprise. Ntamack’s selection with 48% of the votes was a little closer in a relatively even contest.

Australia are the other team with multiple representatives in 2021. Both open side Michael Hooper and second five-eighth Samu Kerevi dominant selections in their various positions.

England and Ireland provide one player each.

Englishman Maro Itoje joins Etsebeth in the second row, benefiting from unabated media hype and on-field histrionics (and the occasional highlight reel moment), whereas Ireland’s Tahdg Furlong choice at tighthead prop for his all round excellence beat back a very strong field.

The dual coaching team of Faben Galthie (France) and Simon Middleton (England Women) guides 2021’s TSF TOTY in their proposed matches against any Martian invaders.

The organising committee would like to thank the judges for nearly getting it right.

(1) with the possible exception of 2019 when Kirwan ran the competition, and unfortunately I don’t have access to those results.. and those years when I messed up the running (2017) or didn’t run it (2018, 2020) or didn’t keep a record (2014) (edit - found the 2019 results and it is the second time NZ didn't have the most players) (2) what’s the opposite of surpassing?

I think it's well known I've been no fan of Jordie's over the years, but even I agree with this decision (and voted for him). But, as you note, I'm as much as a moron as anyone else on here.

Maro Itoje being there is more of a ? for me but I only saw him play a few games, so assume he was godlike in the ones I missed.

Great work! A worthy 15, apart from Ntmack. It is quite obvious the ferners only watched the end of year tour, as he played pretty average throughout the year, when he played (he missed a bit) and often not at 10!

I think, like Gobby Itoje, Samisoni got in on the highlights reel too, I voted for him cos he was a joy to watch!

I quick glance though shows McCaw as the name appearing over the year the most, I think

Just reminder, I'm back on the phone and can only see the first three columns of the tables. You can scroll left and right to see the other columns.

I've got a list of that in my spreadsheet but have not updated yet. It's a dumb spreadsheet so have to do that manually as am not clever enough to do a database.

L’Equipe 2021 rugby team of the year:

  1. Jordie Barrett (New Zealand), 14. Will Jordan (New Zealand), 13. Rieko Ioane (New Zealand), 12. Lukhanyo Am (South Africa), 11. Louis Rees-Zammit (Wales), 10. Romain Ntamack (France), 9. Antoine Dupont (France)

1 Cyril Baille (France), 2. Julien Marchand (France), 3. Tadhg Furlong (Ireland), 4. Maro Itoje (England), 5. Eben Etzebeth (South Africa), 6. Siya Kolisi (South Africa), 7. Michael Hooper (Australia), 8. Ardie Savea (New Zealand).

I can't decide between a. the writer must be an outside back hence the order or b. the writer must be a tight forward (hence France at 1 and 2, and Tadhg isn't a bad choice at 3) so it doesn't matter who the back three are.. (and quite frankly our midfield has been mostly hit and miss this year).

@Chris-B Beauden is also a tinny bastard. Shit just seems to happen for him. I'm actually a big fan of Jordan so happy to see him getting regular game time, he's the kind of guy that can break open a tight test.

Beauden was a tinny bastard. Or maybe he still is but no longer trusts his tinniness (apart from some nice intercepts). But said t-factor was less obvious this season IMO.

I thought 8 D Vermeulen (SA) was great this year .. or maybe I missed some important games.
Would anyone rather have Ardie than him at 8?

Whenever Samisoni played, it was likely to be highlights reel material...did he have a bad game in black this year?

So did the majority of TSF. Not sure of your point?
