Chiefs v Hurricanes
My two cents on the game and I don't like to bag on the refs too much but the performance from O'Keefe was worryingly poor on both sides of the ball. (will leave it at that)
On the match itself, I felt the Canes really stood up on defence and kudos where it's due to the likes of Prinsep who made a whopping 21 tackles - if he puts in a shift like that every week then fair play to him on selection.
Player | Tackles | Missed Tackles |
---|---|---|
Prinsep | 20 | 2 |
KirifiFL | 14 | 1 |
Savea | 8 | 0 |
I thought Scrafton had a blinder at lock apart from the two yellow cards (which on another day he have got away with) and Lomax was once again rock solid at scrum time.
In the backs it was fairly obvious that Jordie brought the composure back into our game that was missing in the first two rounds. He helped the guys around him flourish so long may that continue.
The pick of the rest for me was Kobus van Wyk who was solid with ball in hand and competent under the high ball. I was also really happy with Peter Umaga-Jensen aswell, defensively superb and proved a handful for the Chiefs defence at times.
The Chiefs, well where do we start. They relied far too much on their small men in this game and they just look like a poorly coached outfit.
The frustration was summed up at half time by the assistant coach so I can't imagine the Chiefs will get too much rest over the bye week.

The gap between Aaron Smith and every other halfback in NZ is like the Grand Canyon.
Bryn Hall, your time has come.

Definitely plays a role. If we wanted Smith to go hell for leather for 65 and still be able to play at a rapid pace he'd be ideal for the bench.

Chiefs need to start both Te Toiroa & Alaimalo!
Get some of the forwards to do the grunt work instead of Cruden.

I think the biggest surprise of the tournament post-Covid is how shit Gatland's Chiefs have been.
Can anyone say they expected this?
It’s interesting how bad they look ,
Here I was thinking Gatland was the recruit of the year, up there with beaudy ,
@taniwharugby really brought life into the backs. Tahuriorangi looking sharp while Weber looking sluggish. Alaimalo looking like he might come back to his 2018 form.

Some photos of where the penalty was given and where the kick was taken from. Not fuming about it personally but O'Keeffe showing his incompetence.
@Yeetyaah Must suck to have such a whinging coach. Not only are you losing on the field but the coach is now also making the Chiefs look like complete dicks after the game too.
At least when you had Rennie you won the game first and then had a whinge afterwards.
@Yeetyaah If that's an accurate depiction (e.g. not a second penalty during the phase), then that's shocking incompetence from the ref.

The ARs should be taken to task on this as well - they're supposed to assist in marking the position of the infringement.

Haven’t seen a good still photo compilation with circles and arrows showing NZ rugby cheating since some of the Aussies left the Fern.
Rugby is officially back.

Given the two leg-ups the Chiefs got from the YC (x2) I don’t think moaning about that penalty is really worth it.
Taking the coaching staff out for a beating though...
Can’t see how that second yellow is a “leg up”
The player cocked up and illegally prevented a try. Law book says that’s a yellow.
This was hidden in the media release with the referee announcements for the weekend.
Hurricanes lock Scott Scrafton will serve no further suspension after he received two yellow cards during their win over the Chiefs in Hamilton on Sunday. His second yellow card subsequently meant he then saw red. He is free to play against the Highlanders this weekend.
Not surprising, considering they were relatively minor offences.
I guess this also means that Sam Cane comes off wihtout even a Commissioner's warning (off-field yellow) for that late wack on Perenara.

@Stargazer should be given a reward
No he shouldn't. It was obviously accidental and TJ deserved a proper whacking for blocking the running line.
If anything TJs acting afterward deserved a razzie.

The mere idea he should be penalised for two players running into the same space is ridiculous. As is the "late tackle" explanation. There's no tackle, just a halfback getting in the way of a flanker.
