Let’s face it – you had to wade through some dross to get really excited about the footy at RWC IV. The rugby really wasn’t massively spectacular. However, luckily for us, and this series of articles, there were one or two notable exceptions.
This instalment: 1999, Back in Britain (the one all you closet French supporters have been waiting for… or should that now be the first one all you closet French supporters have been waiting for…)
The high regard for this event is due not so much to the shear quality of the rugby, but for the emotions, controversy, excitement, atmosphere and meaning that came to be associated with the match.
In my opinion RWC III was the best of the Tournaments to that date – and still matches with the best of the subsequent Cups. Perhaps just perception but the rugby seemed of a more enjoyable quality.
